BECOME A SCUBA PROFESSIONAL S.C.U.B.A (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) was first introduced to the world by Jacques Cousteau in 1943. Since then Scuba has grown exponentially, becoming one of the world's most fascinating and popular recreational activities.
Internationally, the worldwide scuba community certifies more than a million new scuba divers per year. This astounding growth has led to an increased demand for professional scuba divers and scuba instructors. The Diving Locker has been offering scuba courses since 1972. As a member of PADI, the world's leading scuba diving training agency, Diving Locker has evolved into Canada's largest scuba training facility.
In 1994 the Diving Locker founded The Vancouver Diving Institute to specialize in the in-depth training of highly competent and employable scuba diving instructors and scuba professionals. The Diving Institute's curriculum is comprised of PADI courses that utilize a modular approach to scuba diving instruction within a positive learning environment. Students enter the Institute's program as certified PADI open water divers, having already mastered basic diving skills. The emphasis is on performance based, dynamic training.
Initially, the students complete task oriented courses, PADI Advanced Plus and perform supervised specialty dives, designed to broaden their diving experience in various environments. Upon satisfactorily completing the required tasks, students develop other person oriented skills. In the PADI Rescue Diver course, students learn to develop observational skills that teach them to prevent and manage scuba safety issues. The focus then shifts to leadership training in PADI Divemaster and Instructor courses, where students develop supervisory and teaching skills.
Seminars incorporated into the curriculum include Marine Biology, the Business of Diving, retail operations, marketing, dry suit manufacturing, equipment manufacturer lectures and hyperbaric medicine. Vancouver Diving Institute's courses and seminars are all conducted by scuba professionals selected for their specialized expertise. Programs are dynamic and reflect changes in technology, methods, and materials. Our commitment to instructor development has resulted in the Diving Locker becoming the first diving operation in Canada to achieve PADI's highest facility rating: "5 Star Career Development Center". |
